Body-Safe Sex Toy Materials: What the Evidence Says
In 2023 a research team bought four sex toys in triplicate, ran them through a standardised abrasion machine, and chemically analysed what came off. All four shed micro- and nanoplastic particles. When the residue was solvent-extracted and run through GC-MS, phthalates known to be endocrine disruptors were present in all tested sex toys at levels exceeding hazard warnings — including the one the team had picked for its popularity on Amazon and for the “medical grade silicone” claim on its box (Sipe et al., Microplastics and Nanoplastics, 23 Mar 2023). Four products is four products, and the authors say so themselves: the data set “is not intended to be exhaustive or fully representative of the sex toys as an entire class of products.”

Quick take: “body-safe” is not a standard. No US agency defines it, and none reviews these products before they are sold. Two peer-reviewed studies have measured the things the buying guides assert, and a government survey measured them back in 2006. None of the five guides we read for this piece cites any of them. Five of the nine results ranking for this question sell the product category they are advising on. The practical consequence is not that silicone is bad — the evidence does not say that. It is that the confident list you are being handed rests on less than it appears to.
”Body-safe” is a phrase, not a certification
Most of the guides we read allude to phthalates being banned, or to the industry being unregulated, without saying which rule they mean. Peepshow is the exception and gets it right, naming the 2008 Congressional ban on certain phthalates in children’s toys and child-care products. Both halves are worth pinning down anyway, because the answer is more specific than either version.
The federal phthalate restriction is 16 CFR part 1307. Its scope section limits the whole part to “any children’s toy or child care article”, and its definitions section defines a children’s toy as “a consumer product designed or intended by the manufacturer for a child 12 years of age or younger for use by the child when the child plays” (16 CFR part 1307, eCFR, retrieved 5 Aug 2026). The rule bans concentrations above 0.1 percent of eight named phthalates in those products. On our reading of that scope language, an adult product is not a children’s toy, so the limit that gets invoked in this category is a limit written for a different one. We are reading a rule here, not giving legal advice.
The Food and Drug Administration is not absent, but it is narrower than people assume. There is a classification, 21 CFR 884.5960, for a “genital vibrator for therapeutic use”, and its identification clause covers a device “intended and labeled for therapeutic use in the treatment of sexual dysfunction or as an adjunct to Kegel’s exercise”. It is Class II, and the regulation goes on to say the device “is exempt from the premarket notification procedures in part 807, subpart E, of this chapter subject to the limitations in § 884.9” (21 CFR 884.5960, eCFR, retrieved 5 Aug 2026). That trailing clause is usually dropped and it matters: § 884.9 pulls the exemption back for a device with a different intended use or a fundamentally different technology, so the exemption is not unconditional. Reading the two together, our understanding is that a product not labelled for therapeutic use is not in this classification at all, and that one which is will ordinarily reach the market without a premarket submission unless § 884.9 bites. That is our reading of the scope, not a determination anyone has made for us.
So when a page tells you the industry is unregulated, it is roughly right, and the roughness matters: there is no agency assigning the words “body-safe” any content, and no filing anyone can go and read.
What the two studies actually measured
The 2023 work above is one of them. Its four products came out as polyethylene terephthalate, PVC, a rubber mixture, and a silicone blend, and all four released particles under abrasion, with the anal toy releasing the most and the external vibrator the least.
Two details from its methods matter more than the headline, and both cut against over-reading it. Three of the four were chosen to be as close as the team could get to products in earlier phthalate reports, meaning products already suspected, so finding phthalates in those three is much less surprising than finding them at random. The paper’s own background explains why: prior material analyses of sex toys had found phthalates in most tested products at 24 to 60 percent by weight. The fourth product is the interesting one, and it was not picked from that literature. It was bought for its popularity on Amazon and for the “medical grade silicone” claim on its packaging. That is this article’s argument, run as an experiment by someone else: the claim on the box did not predict what came out of the machine. Treat the study as a reason to distrust the label rather than as a verdict on silicone.
The other is older and answers the porosity question directly. Anderson and colleagues recruited twelve women, had each use a thermoplastic elastomer vibrator and a silicone vibrator on separate occasions, and swabbed the shaft of each immediately after use, immediately after cleaning with a commercial cleaner, and 24 hours after cleaning. HPV was found in the vaginal samples of nine of the twelve. Of those nine, the TPE shaft was positive in 89 percent before cleaning, 56 percent immediately after cleaning, and two of the five that were still positive after cleaning remained positive a day later. The silicone shaft was positive in 67 percent before cleaning and 44 percent immediately after cleaning, and in none of them at 24 hours (Anderson et al., Sexually Transmitted Infections, Nov 2014).
Read that carefully, because it says two things and the guides only repeat one. Silicone did clear and TPE did not, which is real support for preferring it. But the silicone vibrator’s swabs still carried HPV DNA immediately after cleaning in four of nine cases, and the phrasing that dominates this topic — non-porous, therefore nothing can hide, therefore clean once washed — is not what twelve women and two vibrators demonstrated. The authors’ own conclusion is that the results support the potential for transmission via shared toys and show “the need for evidence-based recommendations for sex toy cleaning”, which is a request for guidance that does not yet exist rather than a summary of guidance that does.
Twelve participants and four products between the two journal papers. There is older work too. The 2023 paper’s background states that prior material analyses of sex toys found phthalates in most tested products at 24 to 60 percent by weight — a striking number, and the one worth following back.
We followed it. It rests on three references. One is a 2006 Danish Environmental Protection Agency survey of chemical substances in sex toys, by Nilsson and colleagues, which is a real government study of this exact product category, is free to read in English, and is the one we would send you to (Nilsson et al., Danish EPA Survey of Chemical Substances in Consumer Products no. 77, 2006, retrieved 5 Aug 2026). The second is a 2003 report from TNO, a Dutch research institute, on hazardous chemicals in consumer products generally. The third, in the paper’s own reference list, is a page on badvibes.org dated 2006.
We are not going to be snide about that. Nobody else was measuring these products in 2006, and the page exists because someone decided to. But it does mean the most quotable figure in this literature is carried in part by a citation few readers following it would expect, in a paper we have otherwise leaned on all the way through this piece. If the argument here is that you should check what your sources cite, the argument applies to ours.
Where the sourcing points
Of the nine results ranking for this question when we pulled the search on 5 August 2026, five are online retailers or a manufacturer selling the products. One of the five is not an article at all: it is a shop’s silicone collection page, carrying a store rating and a price range, ranking on an informational query.
None of this is concealed, and it is worth being precise about that rather than implying a cover-up. The Peepshow guide states the connection outright — “Peepshow Toys stocks the following materials because they’re functionally nonporous” — though its byline is Phallophile Reviews rather than the shop itself (Peepshow Toys body-safe materials guide, retrieved 5 Aug 2026). WIRED, the only conventional news result on the page, tells readers plainly that “if you buy something using links in our stories, we may earn a commission” (WIRED, 12 Feb 2024, retrieved 5 Aug 2026). Both disclosures are more than many sites manage, and we hold ourselves to the same standard, which is why the header of this page tells you where our own money comes from.
The problem is a step past disclosure. A recommended-materials list that is also the shop’s stock list is an inventory presented as a finding, and the reader is not invited to notice the difference. That is why the sourcing gap matters more than the commercial interest, and it is narrower and stranger than “they cite nothing”. Across the five guides we read in full (The Natural Love Company, Peepshow Toys, Dear Rabbits, Bellesa Boutique and WIRED), none cites a study that measured a sex toy. Two of the five link no scholarly or government source at all. The other three are worth taking one at a time, because what they cite is more revealing than an absence would be.
Peepshow Toys footnotes its claims properly: eleven footnotes, including three journal articles on PubMed Central, the National Toxicology Program’s carcinogen profile for DEHP, the CDC’s phthalates biomonitoring page, and the CPSC’s guidance on the 2008 children’s-toy ban. Those are real sources about phthalate toxicity and about a rule; none is a measurement of this product category.
WIRED links four scholarly sources of its own, a Frontiers in Pharmacology paper plus two PubMed Central articles and a journal paper on mucosal pH, all about tissue and pH rather than about materials, and it never uses the word phthalate at all. Its heuristic is that you should look for the materials an iPhone is made of, which is a genuinely useful mnemonic and is not offered as evidence.
Bellesa Boutique is the one that matters most here. It links a government source once, from the words “regulated by the FDA”, in the sentence: “medical-grade silicone is regulated by the FDA and adheres to a certain standard of health and safety, providing you with the most peace of mind possible under the current systems” (Bellesa Boutique, retrieved 5 Aug 2026). The link goes to the FDA’s device centre, which is Bellesa’s own choice of reading and the one we are answering. Read it against the regulation quoted at the top of this page and, on the same reading we set out there, the proposition does not hold: that classification reaches a device intended and labelled for therapeutic use, and ordinarily exempts even that one from premarket notification unless § 884.9 applies. A silicone vibrator sold as a vibrator does not appear to be in it at all. “Medical grade” does have real regulatory touchpoints on the materials side, in food-contact rubber articles and in biocompatibility data referenced in device submissions, but neither reaches a consumer product not sold as a device, and we found no one who verifies the designation on a consumer toy’s box. So the most reassuring sentence we found in any of these guides is sourced, on our reading, to an agency that does not do the thing being described. The 2023 study gives the shorter answer: phthalates turned up in all four of its products, including the one it bought precisely because the box promised otherwise.
Peepshow also gets closest on the biology, mentioning HPV in the same breath our own advice does — recommending a barrier between partners because of viral STIs. It does not cite Anderson et al., and neither does any other page we read. So the shape of the gap is not that these guides are unsourced. It is that a category which has been measured, by two journal papers and by a Danish government survey back in 2006, has a page one where the sourcing points everywhere except at the measurements.
What the makers say about their own materials
The advice everyone gives is to check what a toy is made of. It is worth seeing what that actually returns.
Lovense’s Lush 4 page carries a specifications table with a Material field reading “Silicone, Electroplated plastic”, and an on-page FAQ that goes considerably further: “Lush 4’s exterior is made from 100% pure body-safe silicone. The LED light-tail is made from electroplated plastic. None of Lovense’s products contain phthalates or any other harmful chemicals” (Lovense Lush 4 product page, retrieved 5 Aug 2026). The first two sentences are a specification. The third is an unqualified negative across an entire product line and every chemical, with no test report, no laboratory and no standard named. We have no evidence against it and are not suggesting there is any. We are pointing out that a buyer has no way to check it — a laboratory does, as the study at the top of this page shows, but a shopper reading a product page does not — and that this site earns money on that company’s products, which is exactly why we would rather say it here than not.
Satisfyer’s Double Love page does the first part just as well. Its marketing copy says “body-friendly silicone” and “genuine metal”, but under the Properties tab it publishes a specification field reading “ABS plastic, Silicone” — the same shape of answer, and the one our own comparison guide reports (Satisfyer Double Love product page, retrieved 5 Aug 2026). What it does not do is make a chemical claim: the word phthalate does not appear on that page at all.
So the difference between the two is not specification versus adjective; both give a specification. It is that one company adds an unqualified promise covering every product it sells and every chemical there is, and the other says nothing. Neither links a test report. Of those two postures the silent one is the easier to live with, because there is nothing in it a buyer is invited to rely on and cannot check.
That gap is the thing worth looking for, and it is the same method we used on app privacy filings in what sex toy apps say they collect: compare what a company puts in a structured field against what it puts in marketing prose, and treat the distance between them as information.
What to actually check before buying
- Read the specification tab, not the sales copy. The marketing paragraph says “body-friendly silicone”; the specification field, if there is one, says “ABS plastic, Silicone”. Both makers we checked publish one and both are easy to miss, because they sit behind a tab. A maker with no specification field anywhere has told you less than either of them.
- Treat an unqualified chemical claim as weaker than a specific one. “Contains no phthalates or any other harmful chemicals” covers every product and every chemical, and nobody outside the company can test it. “The shaft is platinum-cure silicone” is narrower and therefore more useful, even though it promises less.
- Assume shared toys need a barrier regardless of material. This is the one place the evidence is directional and the guides under-sell it: cleaning reduced HPV DNA on both vibrators and eliminated it on neither immediately. A condom over a shared toy costs nothing and sidesteps the whole argument.
- Do not use the price as a proxy. Nothing in either study links cost to composition, and neither do we. Limits worth naming
We have not tested any product, commissioned any analysis, or verified any manufacturer’s chemical claim, and nothing above depends on our having done so. Everything here is a regulation we retrieved and quoted, a published study we read, a manufacturer’s page fetched on 5 August 2026, or a competing guide we opened and read the same day. That last is where the claims about who cites what come from.
Two studies is a thin literature, and thin in specific ways. Twelve participants is a small sample and university-recruited; four products cannot represent a category with thousands of SKUs; and the abrasion machine in the 2023 work is explicitly not a simulation of use. Thinner still on the point this article cares about most: since three of those four were chosen as analogs of products already found to contain phthalates, the label-versus-reality observation rests on a single product. One product is an anecdote with a mass spectrometer attached. It is worth more than the zero measurements page one offers, and it is not worth more than that. A reader who takes either study as settling the question is making the same mistake as a page that cites neither. The right conclusion is that this is an under-researched product category in which confident advice is cheap, and that the makers who write the most specific declarations are the ones giving you something to hold them to.
FAQ
Is “body-safe” a regulated term? No. No US agency defines it, certifies it, or checks it before a product is sold. The federal phthalate limits people have in mind are 16 CFR part 1307, and that part applies to children’s toys and child care articles, with children’s toy defined as a product intended for a child 12 or younger. Is silicone actually safer than TPE or jelly? On the one measurement that exists, it did better, and not by as much as the guides imply. Anderson and colleagues had twelve women use a thermoplastic elastomer vibrator and a silicone one, then swabbed both. Before cleaning, the TPE shaft carried HPV DNA in 89% of the positive cases and the silicone shaft in 67%. Immediately after cleaning with a commercial cleaner, TPE was still positive in 56% and silicone in 44%. Twenty-four hours after cleaning, silicone showed none and TPE still showed some. So silicone cleared and TPE did not — but “non-porous means bacteria have nowhere to hide” is a stronger statement than a material that was still positive in four of nine samples right after washing.
Do sex toys contain phthalates? Some do, including at least one described as silicone. A 2023 study in Microplastics and Nanoplastics bought four products in triplicate, abraded them under standardised conditions, and chemically analysed what came off. How can I tell what a toy is actually made of? Read the maker’s own specification, not the marketing line, and notice how specific it is. Lovense’s Lush 4 page gives a Material field reading “Silicone, Electroplated plastic” and adds in its FAQ that none of its products contain phthalates or any other harmful chemicals. Satisfyer’s Double Love page publishes one too, under its Properties tab: “ABS plastic, Silicone”. Neither publishes a test report. So both name the material, and the real difference is the promise on top of it — Lovense adds an unqualified chemical claim covering its whole range, and Satisfyer says nothing about phthalates at all.
