IPX7 Waterproof Sex Toys: What That Rating Certifies

Six product pages, all read on 10 August 2026, all for devices this site already documents: the Lush 4, Lush 3, Ferri and Gush 2 Motion from Lovense, We-Vibe’s Sync 2, and Satisfyer’s Double Love. Every one of them publishes the same marking, IPX7, with nothing after it. Five of the six invite you to take the device into the shower. And not one publishes the dual code that the standard behind that marking provides for exactly that claim.

Quick take: IPX7 is the record of one test. Thirty minutes in still fresh water, deep enough that a handheld device sits a metre under. Directed water is a different question with its own numerals, and IEC 60529 states that an enclosure designated with numeral 7 alone is “considered unsuitable for exposure to water jets”. Its table has a name for that marking: Restricted. A manufacturer who has tested for both is told how to say so, by dual-coding the result as IPX5/IPX7 or IPX6/IPX7. Of the six pages we read, none does.

One thing this is not. It is not a claim that your device will die in the shower, and the argument would be weaker if it were. What a marking records is a test somebody ran. Where a device actually starts to fail is a separate question, and the marking was never an answer to it. The claim is narrower and harder to wave away: the number on the box carries no directed-water numeral at all, so it is silent about running water, and the people selling the device fill that silence with a yes.

Where this standard is, and which edition this is

The marking comes from IEC 60529, Degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP Code). It is not free to read. The copy quoted throughout this article is IS/IEC 60529:2001, the Bureau of Indian Standards adoption, whose own national foreword states it “is identical with IEC 60529 : 2001” and is a consolidated Edition 2.1 combining the 1989 text with Amendment 1 of 1999. That is a real limitation and it belongs up front rather than in a footnote. The current edition is 2.2, issued in 2013, and it is the one United States federal regulation points at: 46 CFR 111.01-9 requires certain shipboard electrical equipment to meet “NEMA 250 Type 2 or IEC 60529:2013 IP 22” degree of protection, incorporating the standard by reference (eCFR, 46 CFR 111.01-9, retrieved 10 Aug 2026). We did not read the 2013 edition. Every clause quoted below is from the 2001 consolidation.

Two things follow from that citation anyway. The standard is load-bearing somewhere: when a regulator wants an enclosure to keep water out of a ship’s switchboard, this is the document it names. And the scope of the thing is narrow. Clause 1 says the standard “applies to the classification of degrees of protection provided by enclosures for electrical equipment with a rated voltage not exceeding 72,5 kV”. It is a filing system for enclosures, not a promise about a product.

What the number is a record of

Clause 14.2.7, in full, is the whole of what a 7 in the second position means. The enclosure is immersed in water in the service position the manufacturer specifies, so that:

a) the lowest point of enclosures with a height less than 850 mm is located 1 000 mm below the surface of the water; b) the highest point of enclosures with a height equal to or greater than 850 mm is located 150 mm below the surface of the water; c) the duration of the test is 30 min; d) the water temperature does not differ from that of the equipment by more than 5 K.

Anything handheld takes branch (a). It goes a metre down and stays there for half an hour. This is worth pausing on, because the version of this fact that circulates online is often the 150 mm figure, which belongs to branch (b) and applies to enclosures at least 850 mm tall. A vibrator is not one of those.

Then the condition that governs all of the water tests, from clause 14.2 and stated in seven words: “The tests are conducted with fresh water.” Not chlorinated, not salted, not soapy. Clause 1 goes further and puts a whole category of exposure outside the IP Code entirely, listing measures against “corrosion”, “corrosive solvents (for example, cutting liquids)”, “fungus”, “vermin”, “solar radiation”, “icing” and “moisture (for example, produced by condensation)” as matters for a separate product standard. That list is prefaced “such as” rather than closed, and it names neither soap nor lubricant nor anything that happens to a seal as it ages. The code does not place them outside itself so much as decline to speak about them.

The X is a blank, not a zero

The first position of the code is about solid objects, and in IPX7 it has been left empty. Clause 4.1 is explicit about what that means: “Where a characteristic numeral is not required to be specified, it shall be replaced by the letter ‘X’.”

So the X is not a score. It is a declaration that this characteristic was not specified. A reader who takes IPX7 as “no dust protection” has read it as a zero, and a reader who takes it as a full marking has read it as a pass. It is neither. Only the 7 carries information.

The standard has a word for a bare IPX7, and the word is restricted

Here is clause 6 of the standard, the one the whole question turns on and the one that appears on none of the pages we read. It first states the rule people are half-remembering when they treat the numerals as a ladder:

Up to and including second characteristic numeral 6, the designation implies compliance also with the requirements for all lower characteristic numerals.

Read the first four words again, because they are the load-bearing ones: the implication rule stops at numeral 6. It does not continue upward. The standard then says what happens above it:

An enclosure designated with second characteristic numeral 7 or 8 only is considered unsuitable for exposure to water jets (designated by second characteristic numeral 5 or 6) and need not comply with requirements for numeral 5 or 6 unless it is dual coded as follows

The standard then spells out the two rows at the bottom: enclosures for restricted application “are considered suitable only for temporary or continuous immersion and unsuitable for exposure to water jets”.

Notice how much of the answer that table gives away. A bare IPX7 is not the top of the range. It is a corner of it, and the standard’s own name for that corner is Restricted. The versatile markings are the ones with two numbers in them.

Now the limit of the argument, stated plainly, because overstating it would be the easy mistake. A domestic shower head is not the numeral-5 test. Clause 14.2.5 sets that one at a nozzle of 6.3 mm internal diameter delivering 12.5 litres a minute, plus or minus 5 per cent, from between 2.5 and 3 metres away. The volume is not the point and is easy to misread: what makes it a jet is that all of it is driven through a single 6.3 mm opening rather than spread across a shower head’s many. And the standard’s release of numerals 5 and 6 is specific: it names those two and says nothing about 3 and 4, the spraying and splashing numerals, so a bare IPX7 is not formally disclaimed against them either. It simply never carried them.

Even so, a marking claims what it was tested for, not what it was never disclaimed against. Absence is the whole of what a shopper gets here, and read as a shower rating, IPX7 is being asked a question it was never given the chance to answer.

Passing does not mean nothing got in

Clause 14.3 sets what counts as a pass, and it is about consequences rather than sealing. If any water has entered, the standard says, it shall not:

be sufficient to interfere with the correct operation of the equipment or impair safety; deposit on insulation parts where it could lead to tracking along the creepage distances; reach live parts or windings not designed to operate when wet; accumulate near the cable end or enter the cable if any.

An enclosure can take on water during the test and still be marked IPX7. That is a defensible engineering rule, and it is also flatly different from what a shopper reads into the word waterproof. It matters most for the marketing phrase that goes beyond the number: when a product page says a device is fully sealed, that is a claim about construction, and the IPX7 marking beside it is not the evidence for it.

What page 1 tells people instead

We opened three of the ten results Google returned in the United States for are sex toys waterproof ipx7 on 10 August 2026. All three are commercial. There is no health publisher, no consumer-testing organisation and no standards body on the page, and Google’s answer box for the query was a manufacturer’s blog.

SVAKOM is the most careful of them and gets closest. It separates a water-resistant rating from an immersion rating, describes IPX6 as handling “a shower stream” while noting that fully submerging such a device “isn’t recommended”, which is the right shape of distinction. Then it recommends IPX7 as “ideal for bathtub or pool play” (SVAKOM, Guide to Waterproof Sex Toys, retrieved 10 Aug 2026). A pool is outside the water the test uses.

FemmeFunn explains the X correctly, calling it “a placeholder for a dust-resistance rating”, and then publishes a comparison table with a row for Use in the shower: no for IPX4, yes for IPX7. Its prose says toys with an IPX7 rating “are perfect for the bath or shower” (FemmeFunn, Splashproof vs. Waterproof Sex Toys, retrieved 10 Aug 2026). Both cells of that row invert the standard’s treatment of directed water, which numeral 4 addresses as splashing from any direction and numeral 7 does not address at all.

Liberator builds the ladder explicitly, describing “higher-ranking toys with a rating of IPX7 or IPX8”, labelling IPX7 “Bath-time approved” and IPX8 “Pool play, if you dare”, and steering readers who “prefer sinking into a bath or even venturing into the hot tub” toward exactly those two (Liberator, What IPX Ratings in Sex Toys Means, retrieved 10 Aug 2026). The hot tub is the sharpest case: it sits outside the fresh-water condition the test was run under, and a tub warm enough to be worth sitting in is more than 5 K above a device kept at room temperature, which is the gap clause 14.2.7(d) allows between the water and the equipment.

One page-1 result we would have liked to read, and the one whose snippet suggests it states the immersion depth incorrectly, returned HTTP 403 to us. Because we could not open it we make no claim about what it says, which is the only defensible position: not being able to retrieve a page is not evidence about its contents. Three of ten opened is the honest scope of this section.

What the makers publish

This is the part a reader can check without buying anything. These are the six product pages, retrieved 10 August 2026, quoted as published.

Four things are worth drawing out of that table, and one of them cuts the other way.

The marking is identical across all six. Every page publishes a bare IPX7 and none publishes a dual code, so on the standard’s own terms all six devices are described as restricted to immersion.

Five of the six then name the shower. That is the gap: the marking is a claim about still water, the sentence beside it is a recommendation about running water, and nothing in between explains how one gets to the other.

Lovense’s Ferri page is the exception, and it deserves saying so. It pairs IPX7 with “perfect for bathtub usage” and does not mention the shower anywhere on the page. That is precisely the sentence a bare IPX7 supports. The same company writes it correctly for one product and reaches past it for three others, which suggests the wording is a copy decision rather than a technical belief.

And the Gush 2 line adds something the marking does not carry. “Fully sealed” is a construction claim, and clause 14.3 permits a passing enclosure to have water inside it. The device may well be sealed. The IPX7 next to the phrase is not the reason to think so.

Who checks the number before you see it

In the United States, no one has to before sale, and it is worth being precise about why.

The standard itself does not do it. Clause 1 lists what the document provides: definitions, designations, requirements, and “tests to be performed to verify that the enclosure meets the requirements of this standard”. That is a test method. Clause 1 sets up no certification scheme and appoints no body, and it leaves to individual technical committees “the extent and manner in which the classification is used in their standards”.

Device regulation does not do it either, for reasons we traced separately in our piece on what FDA approval means for this category: the products sold for pleasure sit outside FDA’s device rule to begin with, and the ones inside it are exempt from the premarket review that might have examined a claim like this.

What is left is advertising law after the fact. The Federal Trade Commission’s guidance for businesses is unambiguous that the obligation exists before publication rather than after a complaint: “The law requires that advertisers have proof before the ad runs”, and a company needs a “reasonable basis” for a claim, where “at a minimum, an advertiser must have the level of evidence that it says it has” (FTC, Advertising FAQ’s: A Guide for Small Business, retrieved 10 Aug 2026). That last clause is the one that bites here. Printing IPX7 is a statement that a specific test was run to a specific standard, which is a higher evidentiary bar than a vague word like waterproof would carry. The same guidance notes that the FTC “looks at both ‘express’ and ‘implied’ claims”, and adds that staff “cannot clear your ads in advance”. So the check exists, but it is a remedy rather than a gate, and it runs on complaints.

What to do with this

Read a bare IPX7 as a bath rating. That is the reading the marking supports, and treating it as a shower rating means trusting a sentence written by the seller rather than the number they cited.

If a product page recommends the shower, look for the dual code. It costs a manufacturer nothing to publish IPX6/IPX7 when the tests were run, and the standard supplies the notation precisely so the stronger claim can be made honestly. A bare numeral beside a shower recommendation is a choice, not a limit of the system.

Treat the pool, the hot tub and the soapy sink as outside the marking altogether. All three fail the same condition: the tests were run with fresh water, and a hot tub adds a second failure by sitting further than 5 K above a device at room temperature. Soap needs no separate clause to rule it out, because it never got in. None of that predicts damage. It means the number is not evidence, and the manufacturer’s care instructions are the better guide.

And do not read the marking as a promise about age. Every condition in clause 14.2.7 describes one test on one enclosure in its stated service position. Seals, ports and adhesives are the parts that change with use, and nothing in the marking speaks to them. Limits of this piece

The two limits that matter most are stated where they arise: we read Edition 2.1 of the standard rather than the 2013 edition United States regulation incorporates, and we opened three of the ten page-1 results. One more belongs here because it has no natural home above. We went looking for a regulator’s enforcement action over an over-marketed water-resistance rating in another product category, and could not retrieve a primary record of any. A search that comes back empty is not a finding, so nothing of the kind is cited above.
